There are definitely ways to ensure that you’ll sleep better, but there are also a bunch of things that could be screwing up your sleep cycle. Some things could be messing with your zzzs, and you don’t even know it! If you’re having trouble sleeping, it might be because of the following reasons:

Using Electronics Before Bed

It’s really easy to say you’re not supposed to use electronics or watch TV before bed, but doing so really does make it hard for you to go to bed. Even using your phone to text or tweet or surf through your Instagram feed up to 30 minutes before you go to sleep can make you stay awake longer. Power off anything with a screen at least half an hour before you hop into bed.

Spicy Foods

Eating before bed in general can throw your body out of sleep mode so it’s best to avoid snacking before you hit the hay. Some foods are okay though like cereal or something small. But spicy foods need to be avoided along with foods high in fat. Spicy food in particular can upset your stomach, making it difficult for you to sleep, as well as cause nightmares!

Sleeping In A Room That’s Too Bright

One thing that could be messing up your sleep is the brightness of your room. I’m not saying you have to sleep in a pitch black room, but even a little moon glow through your window could throw you off. Try getting your room as dark as possible and eliminating any kind light to see if it helps you sleep soundly.

Your Hormones

If you’re a girl and having trouble going to sleep out of nowhere, your hormones might be changing. Your hormones will fluctuate when you’re about to get your period. A change in your hormones can affect your ability to go to sleep as well as your quality of sleep. Take note if you’re waking up in the middle of the night or getting hot flashes in bed.

Having A Messy Room

The state of your environment has a lot to do with how you sleep. Even if you’re not the most organised person in the world, a messy room can make your mind go bananas to the point where it’s keeping you up at night. You don’t have to make things perfect, but at least make sure your bed is clear of all other things to see if that helps you sleep.

Medications & Vitamins

Some medications need to be taken at night, but a lot of them are better left for the morning unless specifically instructed otherwise. Over-the-counter medications and vitamins, especially ones that contain B6, B12, or other stimulants will definitely keep you up at night.
