Every religion, race, creed, culture agree on one thing – lying is wrong. Being dishonest is a bad thing and immoral. Besides, it comes with consequences. Here are a number of reasons you shouldn’t lie about anything. Trust me, I’ve been there.
- Lies are easily forgotten: You can never have problems remembering what you said if it was the truth. The reason people contradict themselves when accounting for an incident is because they told a lie and now they are having problems remembering. Be straight forward always.
- Ruined Reputation: Dishonesty is easily spotted by people. If you keep lying about everything, people will know and label you as a liar. That way you have ruined your reputation. Nobody trusts your words anymore. A name, good or bad travels faster than light. People will gossip that you are a liar and like wild-fire, the news will spread.
- Broken Relationships: How do you feel when you get to know that someone has been lying to you? Your guess is as good as mine. Lying to people who love may cause emotional pain.
- Low self-esteem. The damage lying does to liars is beyond how others see them. Truth is, the more lies you tell, the less respect you have for yourself. In other words, telling lies has a detrimental effect on the way you see yourself.
- Legal Consequences: Lies could get you into trouble with the law. There is a thing line between immorality and illegality when it comes to telling lies. The lies you tell today might not get you into trouble with the law, but what about the bigger lies you may tell in the future?
- Its Addictive: Telling lies is an addictive habit. Don’t even begin. At first, you may feel smarter if someone you told a lie believes it. So, believing no one would ever find out, you try it again and again and again until it becomes a character. Dishonesty is like a sinking sand, the longer you stay in it, the more you become entrenched in it.
Life is easier and better when you are straightforward and candid. Admittedly, telling the truth in some cases can be very difficult. Ask yourself, which is more difficult, the consequences of lying or the benefits of telling the truth?
