Boys and girls, do you feel like everyone you know is dating? Do you believe that dating is the answer to your problems? There is a time for everything, including dating. Unfortunately, our society encourages us to do things in order to fit in or fill a void. And when we do something at the wrong time and for the wrong reasons, including dating, it usually has negative consequences.
Yes, there are bad reasons for having a boyfriend or girlfriend, and here are some of them:
- You are lonely. You’re tired of feeling alone, and having a boyfriend or girlfriend would fill that void and give you someone to hang out with or go places with.
- All of your friends have boyfriends or girlfriends. Everybody’s doing it, right? So, shouldn’t you get in on the action, too? Shouldn’t you date, too, so that you are not the odd one out? But ask yourself: Should others be calling the shots in my own life?
- You want to feel loved. A boyfriend or girlfriend will put you first, so you think. She will be there for you when you are feeling down or upset. He will be on your side, defending you, loving you and thinking about you.
- You want to feel worthy. If you have a boyfriend, then that will prove that you are worth something. Having a boyfriend will make you feel like you are someone, and prove that you are as worthy as all the other girls out there who have boyfriends.
- You couldn’t say No. Maybe the guy you are dating asked you out and you didn’t want to hurt his feelings. Who knows, maybe you will grow to like him that way?
- You want to make someone jealous. Maybe it’s another guy you like, or it’s a girl who turned you down, and dating this new person will hurt them. Dating is no big deal, right? After all, you can break up with this person when the job’s done.
- You need a rebound. You broke up with another guy and it hurt, so you want to date someone else to ease the pain. Or maybe you want the girl who broke up with you to know that you have moved on.
The above reasons are bad reasons to date. Why? Because in every instance, you are using the other person. Having a boyfriend or girlfriend even for the right reasons can be complicated as you get to know each other and deal with real-life situations with each other. Dating for the wrong reasons only adds to the difficulties.
Dearest friends, there’s really only one reason why you should have a boyfriend or girlfriend, and that is because you think this person has the qualities you are looking for in another human – qualities that would make them great for marriage should you ever want to take that step (yes, that’s how much importance you should attach to dating! ).
So you are getting to know him or her better to confirm that this is the case before making your next move. Otherwise, you are just casually dating. And that will only lead to heartbreak.
