DO’S
- Take responsibility for your success or failure at school. The quality of time you devote to your studies will reflect on your grades. Never blame anyone for your academic failure, challenges or problem, face your fears and get the best out of it.
- Set reasonable and achievable academic goals every term. Follow up these goals with the right actions which will certainly boost your performance to a high level.
- Take time to review and analyze your current studying strengths and weaknesses. This will give you a better understanding of yourself, thereby utilizing and focusing on your strengths while you try to work on your weakness to increase productivity.
- Develop a regular time to study and read your textbooks, a time you find best to help you understand what you read. Ensure you finish the readings assigned for each class because this would aid understanding and also give you the opportunity to ask relevant questions during class discussions.
- Develop a good note-taking system: both for reading assignments and for class lectures. Find a system that best suits you.
- Consider breaking up your studying into smaller chunks. Read bit by bit, do not force yourself to read the entire notebook as this may not help you have a good understanding of what you are reading. Reading bit by bit helps in retaining information.
- Research, plan and write in advance of the deadline, seek the help of your teachers if you are experiencing any form of difficulty. Never submit an assignment without having a clear understanding of it.
- Ask your teachers for extra materials to read, do not depend only on your class notes and textbooks. Cultivate the habit of further reading.
- Attend every revision class offered by your teachers especially before your test/exam. Study beforehand so you can ask questions on areas you are not very clear with.
- Find a way to balance studying with all other activities the school offers. The best students are the ones who do well both personally and academically, stay bright in all aspects.
- Live a healthy lifestyle. The human body is designed in a way that it needs balance in everything to function well; a balance in resting, a balance in your diet, a balance in your exercise.
DON’TS
- Never compare your academic performance to anyone else. Each person is unique and comparing yourself to others sets you up for disappointments or even failure. Learn to appreciate yourself at all time.
- Avoid the habit of skipping classes. Each class is as important as the other, attending classes is a relevant component in making you a bright student. Your class note is a basic tool to help achieve better results academically.
- Don’t panic if your grades are not where you hoped or expected them to be rather develop a plan of action to boost your grades.
This include: seeking help from your teachers, attending tutorials and seeking help from other bright students in the class.
- Don’t expect your teachers to be very playful with you. Take time to learn what your teacher expects from you and then follow it up with a plan to live up to those expectations.
