Nigerian midfielder, Kelechi Iheanacho scored on his senior debut for English champions, Manchester City in a pre-season game against Major League Soccer (MLS) leaders, Sporting Kansas City on Thursday.
Iheanacho was included in City’s 25-man squad for their US Tour following impressive displays for the academy side and he proved, with a lively performance against the MLS side that his inclusion in the Citizens’ squad was richly deserved.
The 18-year-old scored a delightful goal in the 88th minute as City rounded off a 4-1 win at the Sporting Park, Kansas City, Kansas.
He had previously come close on two separate occasions to making his mark but his two wonderful long range strikes were acrobatically tipped over by the Kansas goalkeeper, Andy Gruenebaum.
Iheanacho came into prominence following Nigeria’s successful 2013 Fifa Under-17 World Cup outing in the United Arab Emirates.
The midfielder who was voted the best player in the competition is now an integral member of the Nigeria Under-20 side.
He will be looking to force his way into Manuel Pellegrini’s side this season and Thursday’s performance would not have hurt his chances in the slightest.
