The University of Ibadan has offered scholarship to the six candidates that scored 88 per cent and above in its Post-UME test.
The vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Isaac Adewole, stated this at a news conference
held on Friday in Ibadan to announce the result of the examination which was conducted on Saturday.
“The best candidate, Animashaun Oluwakayode Daniel, scored 90 per cent, while five candidates – Ajari Esther, Oteri Efeturi, Ojo Oluwadamilare, Omitoyin Oluwafemi and Aremu Oluwadamilola – scored 88 per cent.
“The scholarship will cover their accommodation. These are bright candidates so we do not expect them to fail.
“We want to assure these students that UI will offer them the best facilities that can be found in Nigeria.
He said that of the 8,844 candidates who registered for the Post-UME test, 6,257 scored 50 and above while 236 did not turn up for the examination.
“If a candidate fails to score 50, he or she is not going to be considered for admission. So, 2,351 candidates failed the examination.’’
The vice-chancellor stressed that the university is concerned about the integrity of its Post-UME test.
“The male to female ratio is 45 to 55; UI admitted more females than males in recent time.’’
The vice-chancellor urged the Federal Government to introduce strategies that would encourage students to study agriculture.
“Government at all levels as well as parents and guardians must encourage students to study agriculture and education courses in the overall interest of the nation,’’ he said.
“You see the majority of parents come to say their sons and daughters want to read medicine, law and all that.’’
According to him, hardly do parents say their sons and daughters want to study agriculture or education.
Adewole explained that the trend could be counterproductive, saying all sectors should be given equal attention.
