Gossip and rumours aren’t okay. And being the subject of a rumour is horrible. Trust me, I’ve been there. Whether a rumour is true or not, it’s really difficult to deal with everyone talking badly about you. It makes you insecure and can really bring you down. If you’re the subject of a rumour, these tips might help you out:
Ignore It
The best thing (and the hardest) is to ignore what people say. You know the truth about yourself, and if people choose to believe rumours about you, that’s on them. I know it’s super difficult to ignore it when people are saying bad things about you, but if it isn’t the truth, you have nothing to hide! Just hold your head up high. People will start gossiping about something else in no time.
Don’t Retaliate
While you may feel like you want to get revenge on the person who started a rumour about you, it’s not the answer. Starting a rumour about someone else won’t make you feel any better about yourself.
Confront The Source
If you know who started a rumour, you might want to confront them. Don’t yell or say anything mean. Let them know that you’re aware of what they said and would appreciate it if they stopped and didn’t spread more rumours about you. Sometimes a little confrontation can go a long way.
Don’t Participate In Gossip About Others
This is sort of a karmic thing, but I do believe that what you put out into the universe comes back to you. So, if you don’t participate in gossiping about others and don’t put up with that type of behaviour, you’re less likely to have it happen to you. Staying out of the gossip can help keep you out of it.
Lean On Your Friends
Sometimes rumours can tear friends apart, but if a rumour has been started about you, go to your friends and tell them the truth. If they’re really your friends, they’ll believe you, stand by your side and defend you.
Talk To An Adult
If things get really out of hand to the point where you can’t end this rumour on your own, talk to an adult you trust. Whether it’s a teacher, parent or family friend, they’ll be able to help you navigate the situation if it’s really affecting you.
