As established in the first part of this post, one of the tasks and responsibilities of a teacher is to bring students to the same page that you are on to bridge the knowledge gap and make learning more fun and interesting to the learner.
We are exploring different strategies simply because using the same technique may not produce the desired result in students.
Try the different strategies out until you get the one that achieves the most remarkable result in the life of the students.
WAYS OF DETERMINING YOUR STUDENTS’ PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
1) DEBATE:
By organizing debate programs, you can easily access the prior knowledge of students on a particular subject. As they present their points for or against the subject matter in the debate, you can determine their prior knowledge.
2) EXPERIENCE
You can show students instances of experiences they may face and ask them what they’ll do in such a situation.
You speak to them from the standpoint of experiences and find their prior knowledge through their answer.
3) LISTEN
Listening to what students speak about reveals their level of knowledge and their prior knowledge. Create time to listen to them. You will observe and learn their prior knowledge.
4) QUIZ
You can organize quizzes for students. Ascertain their knowledge level and the gaps in their knowledge. Present your teaching in such a way and manner that benefits the students maximally.
5) POINT OUT MISCONCEPTIONS
In addition to all the other ways of determining students’ prior knowledge already outlined, another strategy is to test them. Testing them will reveal their conceptions and misconceptions. Listen to them, test them and point out misconceptions they have already.
Finding out the students’ prior knowledge is not enough. Employ these strategies outlined to discern their knowledge gap and a possible reason for their backwardness in a particular subject, then develop a unique teaching model that fits and solves their challenges.
