Week 1 – Meaning, Scope and Importance of Agriculture

Overview – The word “Agriculture” was coined from two Latin words ‘ager’ meaning field, and ‘cultural’ meaning cultivation. Agriculture can be defined as the art and science that involves the cultivation of crops and the rearing of animals for man’s use. This week, we shall be introduced to Agriculture. We shall learn about the branches of Agricultural science (soil science, food science, animal science, horticulture, etc.) and the importance of Agricultural science. Week 2 – Subsistence and Commercial Agriculture

Overview – Subsistence and commercial Agriculture are two methods of practising Agriculture. Subsistence Agriculture is a system of farming whereby a farmer cultivates crops and rears animals for the sole purpose of proving food for himself and his family only. Commercial Agriculture is a system of farming whereby a farmer cultivates crops and rears animals in large quantities for sale. Week 6 – Agro-Allied Industries and Their Relationship with Agriculture

Overview – Agro-Allied industries are industries that rely on Agriculture for their raw materials in order to successfully carry out the production of finished products that can be consumed by animals and humans. Week 7 – Agricultural Laws and Reforms

Overview – Agricultural laws and reforms refer to laws, regulations and measures that apply to Agriculture in a nation. This week, we shall learn about the Agricultural laws and reforms. Week 8 – Land and its Uses

Overview – Land refers to the part of the Earth’s surface that is not covered by water. It is one of nature’s free gifts to man and its importance in Agriculture cannot be overemphasized. The land is defined as the solid part of the Earth’s surface in which agricultural activities can be practised. It is used in planting as well as in the rearing of animals. Week 9 – Environmental Factors Affecting Agricultural Production 

Overview – The environment refers to all the surroundings of living things and all the conditions that influence and affects living things’ development and sustainability. There are several environmental factors that affect agricultural production and these environmental factors are non-genetic factors which influence the growth and development of a plant. These factors are grouped into two – biotic factors (living components of the environment such as soil organisms) and abiotic factors (non-living components of the environment such as climatic factors). Week 10 – Classification of Crops

Overview – In Agriculture, crops have been classified based on their life cycle and their uses. The most common classification is based on life cycle – annual, biennial and perennial crops. Annual crops complete their life cycle in one season or less, biennial crops complete theirs in two seasons and perennial crops complete their life cycle in more than two seasons This week, we shall learn about the classification of crops. Overview – This week, there will be a revision on all the topics covered this term, from being introduced to Agriculture in week 1 to learning about the classification of crops in week 10.
