Week 1 – Irrigation

Overview – Irrigation is the method in which a controlled amount of water is supplied to plants at regular intervals for agricultural purposes. Irrigation agriculture is the type of agriculture which involves the artificial application of water to soil or land for farming purposes. It is done in cases where there is little to no rainfall. It helps reduce the reliance of farmers on rainfall. This week, we shall learn about irrigation – reasons for carrying out irrigation, factors affecting it and its importance. Week 2 – Lumbering

Overview – Lumbering is defined as the feeling of economic trees in the forest, which can be used for domestic, industrial or commercial purposes. A favourable factor for lumbering is the presence of dense tropical forest that provides ready sources of valuable timber. Lumbering helps in providing foreign exchange to countries and it also helps in the provision of employment. But, in cases where lumbering is done without replanting the trees, problems such as the depletion of natural forest products and deforestation. To help solve these problems, afforestation and reforestation should be encouraged. Week 3 – Bush Fallowing

Overview – Bush fallowing is a system of farming cultivation of one piece of land for some years and leaving it for some years with the aim of restoring the fertility to the soil naturally but during this fallow period, the farmer cultivates another piece of land. It is done at the subsistence level of Agriculture and involves the application of crude farm implements such as hoe and cutlass. It helps in restoring the soil nutrients during the fallow period. However, an advantage is that it could lead to wastage of land and soil erosion. This week, we shall learn about bush fallowing – its features, advantages and disadvantages. Week 4 – Fruit Farming in Mediterranean Region (Petroleum, Gold and Copper)

Overview – Also known as orchard farming, fruit farming is defined as the type of farming in which farmers cultivate mainly fruit crops either for domestic, industrial or commercial purposes. It is majorly practised in North West Africa and South West Africa. Fruit farming is important is the provision of foreign exchange in countries. This week, we shall learn about fruit farming – the types of fruits produced, the importance of fruit farming and the problems that come with fruit farming. Week 5 – Mineral Exploitation in Africa

Overview – Mineral exploitation refers to the activities such as mining, extraction, etc. of mineral resources in order to meet different purposes. This week, we shall learn about mineral exploitation in Africa. We shall learn about how elements such as gold, copper and petroleum are mined, transported and marketed, their economic importance and the problems of mining each. To learn more, Click here

Week 6 – Major Hydroelectric Power Projects Africa

Overview – Hydroelectric power refers to the electricity from water. It is achieved through the damming of rivers and the use of river water to turn device turbines leading to the generation of electricity. Hydroelectric power generates electricity (H.E.P) for domestic and industrial uses and it promotes irrigation through the water trapped in the dams. Due to insufficient capital, it becomes difficult to construct and maintain dams which are used for electric power projects. This week, we shall learn about major hydroelectric power projects in Africa – the economic importance, disadvantages of dams, effects of climate on dams and factors favourable for the development of hydroelectric power (H.E.P) projects in Africa. Week 7 – International Economic Cooperation of West Africa

Overview – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is a regional group of 15 West African countries with a mission of promoting economic integration. They also provide peacekeeping in warring nations. The ECOWAS has led to the development of the common market for goods produces within the sub-region. The ECOWAS states face certain problems such as differences in political ideologies. This week, we shall learn about the international economic cooperation of West Africa – ECOWAS. We learn about the aims and objectives of ECOWAS, the benefits of ECOWAS, the problems the member states face and the solutions to those problems.
