INEC Postpones 2015 General Elections for 6 Weeks

The Independent National Electoral commission has reached a decision today, February 07, 2015 to postpone the 2015 general elections for six weeks. INEC reached the decision at a stakeholders meeting held today, February 07. INEC had earlier announced that it would reach a final decision today.

An official close to the commission told the Associated Press that INEC had decided to postpone the election for six weeks due to the threats posed by Boko Haram. The postponement will not only allow extra time for multinational forces to device better strategies to secure the North-East but would also afford the commission extra time to continue the PVC distribution excercise.

You would recall that the call for the postponement of the polls was first made by the National Security Aadviser, Sambo Dasuki but was greeted with a lot of criticism. The US Secretary of State, John Kerry also warned against postponement of the election.
