Grammy Awards 2015: Smith and Beck Hauled top Prizes as Kanye Invades Stage

The 57th Grammys has come and gone with the Briton, Sam Smith emerging the biggest winner, finally arriving on the international stage. Beck was a huge surprise but a well-deserved winner. Beyonce and Pharrell are also top pop winners.

Sam Smith had a breakthrough into music top ranks after wining four awards: best newcomer, best song and best record for Stay With Me, and best pop vocal album for his debut In the Lonely Hour. “Thank you so much for breaking my heart, because you got me four Grammys” the 22-year old English-speaking singer Sam Smith told assembled music royalty.

Astonishingly, Beck’s Morning Phase album won the best album prize beating Beyonce and Smith, who had already been tipped for the top honour. Beyonce went home with 3 gongs, seeming more like a consolation. A small drama played out when Beck was awarded the best album of the year. Kanye briefly feigned an attempt to interrupt Beck when he was being awarded, apparently to protest Beyonce not winning the biggest prize of the night. Kanye invaded the stage like he did in 2009 at the MTV VMAs to interrupt Taylor Swift.

Everyone laughed, it was all big joke afterall. However, Kanye made his true feelings known a few minutes after the ceremony with E!’s Grammy after-show.

He said “Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé,” adding: “Y’all know what it meant when ‘Ye walked on the stage.”

Beck also won in the best rock album category, edging out Ryan Adams and U2.
