This is the heart-melting moment a 14-year-old girl hears her dad’s voice for the very first time.
Maggie Gleason was filmed as doctors at a hospital in Cleveland, US, turned on her hearing implant, which had been placed on the lower part of her brain during a 10-hour surgery.
In the clip, the teenager can be seen breaking into a smile as her dad, Frank, asks: “Maggie, can you hear me?”
Nodding ‘yes’, the rest of the family gasp as Maggie reveals she can hear the voices of her mum and sister too.
Maggie’s mum, Joanna, urges her sister Katie to keep talking, as they all tell Maggie they love her through tears.
The teen was one of the first patients at the UH Case Medical Centre to receive an auditory brainstem implant, a small electronic device that can provide a sense of sound to someone who is profoundly deaf.
Although it will not always return a person’s hearing to normal, the implant will usually at least help them to detect some sounds.
