#PNN E-Mentoring (Taiwo Akinlami): Personal Safety/Self-Protection from Traffic-Related Accidents (5)

Hello my young friends. Sure you are doing great today. How was Valentine’s Day? I am sure you had sensible fun. Does anyone want to share his/her experience with me? Please if you desire to, I am available to listen to you and learn from you.

I think I should go straight to our discussion today, discussing tips on Personal Safety/ Self-Protection from road-traffic-related accidents. Today, I will share with you the last 3 tips, beginning with the 6th.

VII Take a cab from a cab park: when you have to take a cab, I advise you to take a cab from a car park, particularly when you have one very close to you. Many are young people, who have been kidnapped while riding in taxis. When you take a cab from the taxi park, it is safe because all the taxis are registered with the park and the park itself is under a state union of their relevant associations. Therefore, they are easily traceable.

VII. Where you take a cab from the road check the number and do some security checks: it is very important that when taking a cab on the road becomes your only option, you may not go in until youwrite down the registration number. After writing the number, you may text it immediately to your mum, dad, friend or anyone, who should know your whereabouts. You may also call your parents/guardian or friends and give them the particulars of the cab you are in to the hearing of the operators. An operator hears that you are giving his particulars to a third party, he becomes more careful, knowing that if he does anything funny, he will surely be caught.

VIII. Do not stand on the road to watch a movie: Children are killed in Lagos State, where I live while they line up on the road watching movies at shops, where home videos are sold. It is my charge to you not to join the multitude, who stand on the road. In some cases, some of the children, who are found watching movies on the road are those sent to hawk or sent on an errand by the parents. The story was told recently of how a car lost control and rammed into a viewing shop and killed many of the children standing there to watch movies.

I strongly believe that if you will pay attention to these tips, you will be free from the hazards of being on the road. Next week, I will begin to discuss with you how to protect yourself from drug abuse. I think I should sign out here. We will meet again next week. Till then stay SMART!
