- They live for about 10 – 15 years
- They are social and affectionate small parrots.
- They weigh about 0.06kg and reach a length of 17cm
- They reach sexual maturity when they are about 10 months old and they remain faithful to one partner for the rest of their lives
- In some species, it is easy to tell, by plumage, the difference between the males and the females (eg the black-winged love birds) while in others, it is very difficult.
- They live in holes in trees, on rock crevices or shrubs, nesting in groups or pairing off away from the group
- They have their origin in Africa.
- The love birds lay 4 – 6 eggs and incubate them for about 23 days. It takes 43 days for the young birds to fledge
- If a partner dies, the companion shows some erratic behaviour that has been likened to depression.
- Often after a long period of stress or separation, breeding pairs of lovebirds feed each other to re-establish their bond. One bird transfers food to the mouth of its mate, a feeding technique reminiscent of affection in humans—hence the reason for their name. For more bird facts, click here
