COLOUR BLINDNESS. WHAT IS IT?

Colour blindness is the inability or decreased ability to see colour or to differentiate between colours under normal light. People who are colour blind see colours differently from people with normal vision.

Colour blindness does not mean that the sufferer does not see all colours. It rather means they see some colours differently. The usual colours which they see differently are greens, yellows, oranges and reds.

CAUSES

Colour blindness can be inherited. Usually, it is the red – green colour blindness that is usually inherited. Most colour vision are already present at birth.

Biology students know that the eye has two major types of cells – the cone cells and the rod cells. These cells are responsible for our colour vision both at night and in bright light. People usually have three cone cells. Each are sensitive either to blue, green or red light/colour. A colour blind individual lacks one or more of these cone cells.

Other causes may include: Aging, eye problems, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, or diabetic retinopathy, injury to the eye and side effects of some medicines.

SYMPTOMS

  • You may be able to see some colors but not others. For instance, you may not be able to tell the difference between some reds and greens but can see blue and yellow easily.
  • You may see many colors, so you may not know that you see color differently from others.
  • You may only be able to see a few shades of color, while most people can see thousands of colors.
  • In rare cases, some people see only black, white, and gray.

Being colour blind can cause a lot of problems and set limits on what an individual can involve in. For a colour blind person may be restricted on drivers permit. People with red – green colour blindness may not get commercial drivers licence with restrictions preventing them from driving at night. Colour blind pupils/students may have issues with his teachers in school. People who are colour blind may not be able to see whether fruits are ripe.

SOMETHING CAN BE DONE

You should visit an eye specialist. The eye specialist can test your eyes and give valid recommendation. Let your teacher know about the situation. That way he may develop means of carrying you along with the class.
