Frogs are amphibians that are known for their jumping abilities, croaking sounds, bulging eyes and slimy skin. They live all over the world and are among the most diverse animals in the world, with about 6,000 species.

1. A frog is an amphibian. They lay their eggs in water. The eggs hatch into a tadpole which lives in water until it metamorphoses into an adult frog.

2. They are found on every continent except Antarctica.

3. Although frogs live on land their habitat must be near swamps, ponds or in a damp place. This is because they will die if their skin dries out. Frogs don’t need to drink water as they absorb it through their skin.

4. Frogs can lay as many as 4,000 eggs in frogspawn.

5. Some frogs can jump over 20 times their own body length; that is like a human jumping 30m.

6. Frogs use their sticky, muscular tongue to catch and swallow food. Unlike humans, their tongue is not attached to the back of its mouth. Instead it is attached to the front, enabling the frog to stick its tongue out much further.

7. The biggest kind of frog is the Goliath frog (Conraua goliath). They come from Cameroon in West Africa. Their bodies can reach the size of nearly a foot (30 cm) long.(remember: their legs are also at least that long!!!!)

8. Frogs can see forwards, sideways and upwards all at the same time. They never close their eyes, even when they sleep.

9. Frogs come in all sorts of colours. The colourful skin of many tropical frogs acts as a warning to predators that these frogs are poisonous.

10. Lifespan of frogs is between 1-8 years depending on its species.
