Last summer, we decided to redo the pool deck, and I didn’t realize how tricky it was to balance looks and safety. We wanted something modern but also slip-resistant, especially with kids running around. Some materials looked amazing but got super hot under the sun. What safety and maintenance features do you focus on when picking an interlocking pool deck that still looks stylish?

I think people often focus only on design when it comes to pool areas, but comfort and maintenance matter just as much. The best decks I’ve seen use light-colored materials that don’t trap heat and are easy to clean. I also like when the edges around the pool are slightly rounded — it gives a softer, more finished look and adds safety. It’s those small, practical details that make a huge difference once you actually start using the space.

We went through the same challenge when updating ours last year. At first, we picked tiles purely for appearance, but after a few weeks, the surface became slippery when wet — not ideal for kids. We ended up switching to textured pavers that stayed cool and added grip. I found some helpful ideas on https://oakshs.ca/pool-interlocking/ ; they show different materials that combine style and function. One big lesson: always test the texture barefoot before committing. Also, make sure there’s proper drainage so water doesn’t pool up — that’s where cracks and moss start forming. A good balance of design and safety really pays off long-term, especially when you want the deck to look great for years without endless upkeep.
