Topic: CONTINUOUS SERVICE IN GOD’S COMMUNITY
Bible Reference: Genesis 37:12 – 26.
SERVICE
Service is defined as a system that provides something that the public needs which is organized by government or private sector. It means to work or perform duties for a person an organization or a country.
You weren’t created just to consume resources—to eat, breathe, and take up space. God designed you to make a difference with your life. You were created to add to life on Earth, not just take from it. God wants you to give something back.
God calls you to a service far beyond anything you could ever imagine. You were put on Earth to make a contribution.
The Bible says, “In our union with Christ Jesus he has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10b TEV). These “good deeds” are your service to the world. Whenever you serve others in any way, you are actually serving God and fulfilling one of your purposes (Colossians 3:23-24; Matthew 25:34-45; Ephesians 6:7).
A LIFE OF SERVICE: THE LIFE OF JOSEPH
Joseph was from polygamous family. His father Jacob had two wives and two concubines. Joseph was the eleventh son of their father and the first born of Rachael who is the second wife of Jacob. Joseph had a dream of greatness which he told his brothers. They planned to kill him because of this dream, but later they decided to put him inside a pit that had no water.
Reuben the eldest brother suggested that Joseph should not be killed. Joseph’s brother sold him to Ishmaelite men in the absence of Reuben. He was sold for twenty shekels of sliver and they took Joseph to Egypt. Gen 37:29
Joseph’s brothers sent blood stained robe to Jacob their father as an evidence that wild animals must have killed Joseph. When the Ishmaelite trader g0t to Egypt, he sold Joseph to one of the officers of Pharaoh called Potiphar.
Joseph was serving in the house of Potiphar and after a false allegation against him, he was sent to prison.
In the prison Joseph found favour of God and man. He interpreted dreams to other prisoners and he continued o serve faithfully even while in prison. He did service with all sincerity, seriousness, faithfulness and honesty. God elevated him and he became a Prime Minister in Egypt.
Ruth 17-18
Ruth was the wife of the first son of Ehimelech and his wife Naomi. This family went to Moab during the fame of judges. They went to Moab because there was famine in Jerusalem. But in Moab the husband of Naomi and her two sons died. She wanted to return to Israel and the two daughter in-law wanted to accompany her to the land of Israel. She pleaded with them to go back to their parents but Ruth the wife of Mahlon said she would not go back to her people. She promised to die where Naomi dies. Ruth was very faithful to Naomi all the days of her life. Where you die I will die and there i will be buried, and your God shall be my God.
Ruth’s loyalty to her mother in law is a good example for young ladies to Emulate. Joseph did not allow the temptation in Potiphar’s house to over come him. He was determined not to allow himself to be used by Potiphar’s wife. He rendered his service to Potiphar as if it was to God.
BIBLE VERSES ON SERVICE
- Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23-24
- Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9
- His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’. Matthew 25:21
- So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. Matthew 6:2
