TOPIC: Feeds Of Farm Animals
Farm animals are very important because they are major source of protein to man. Caring for them is quite essential. Farmers must ensure that they are given enough quality and quantity feeds to enable them produce enough milk, egg, and meat for consumption.
Classification feed
Animals are fed with different kinds of feeds which vary in composition and uses. These feeds are classification into
- Concentrate into Roughage
- Ration basal feed,supplement, roughage
Concentrate:
These are high every giving feeds with low fibre contents, they are therefore easily digested. Concentrate high in energy are called energy concentrate while one high in protein are called protein concentrate.
They are highly nutritive for this reason they are feeds to animals for growth as well as production e.g grains of cereal such as maize, rice,millet sorghum,,and wheat.
Supplements :
Supplements are feeds given to supply deficient nutrients in the diet of the animals,They are usually reach in protein and may also contain reasonable amount of vitamins and minerals
Roughage:
These are plant material rich in fibres and provides bulk fodder used in grazing animals. It includes the vegetative part of plant fresh, succulent or preserved and fed ashy
Fodder:
“Fodder” refers particularly to foods or forages given to the animals (including plants cut and carried to them), rather than that which they forage for themselves. It includes hay, straw, silage, compressed and pelleted feeds, oils and mixed rations, and sprouted grains and legumes.
