Basic Science JSS 1 Week 2

Topic: Meaning of Science

Introduction

Science can be defined as the knowledge obtained by observation and testing of facts. It can also be referred to as the knowledge about the structure and behavior of the natural and physical world based on facts that can be prove such as an experiment. It can also be defined as the systematic process of making enquiry about the living and non-living things in our environment.

A Scientist

A scientist is a person who studies one or more of the natural sciences (e.g. physics, chemistry and biology).

Basic Science

The word “basic” refers to something that is necessary and most important to all people. Basic science as an integrated science course is a subject that deals with the study of living things and non-living things. It also combines all other science subjects such as physics, biology, health science, agricultural science, geography, etc.

Also, the knowledge we obtain through science is applied systematically to provide our various needs. It is called technology.

Scientific Method

Methods or processes used by scientists to solve scientific problems include the following amongst others;

  • Asking Question: This means that a scientist can ask questions in order to get accurate information. For instance, what makes a car move or is the earth spherical or flat?
  • Observing Things: This means that a scientist is looking carefully in order to find out more information about things.
  • Recording: This means that scientists write down their observations so that they we will not forget and also, to pass down their discoveries to other people.
  • Experiment: These are tests carried out in order to study what happens and to gain new knowledge.
  • Sort Things Out: It means that scientists sort things out to know which group each belongs such as sorting things by classing them into colours, sizes, shapes, etc.
  • Making Guess (Hypothesis): It means that scientists make guesses by giving answers or making judgments about something without being sure of all the facts.
  • Identifying Problems: It means that the ability to identify a problem is also the ability to recognise it and be able to say what the problem is. It means to find or discover a problem.
  • Drawing Conclusion: Conclusion is something that you decide when you have thought about all the information connected with the situation.

Branches of Science

These include:

  • Medical Science: This deals with illness and injuries and their treatment.
  • Agriculture: This is the science and practice of farming
  • Engineering: This is the profession and activity of applying scientific knowledge to designs, building and control of machines, roads, bridges, etc.
  • Social Science: It is the study of people in the society. Such subject includes; geography, economics, etc.
  • Political Science: The study of government and politics.

Some Related Science Occupation

These include; medicine, pathology, pharmacology, etc
