Indeed, health is wealth and to keep up with a good health, it is important to observe a good personal hygiene from the get-go. Personal hygiene in a sense involves taking practical steps to keep oneself and one’s environment clean. When young person’s makeup with unkempt hair, body odour, bad breath, dirty nails, dirty clothes etc, they breed an unhealthy lifestyle that gets them to be avoided by others.

Everyone appreciate people that are neat even people of different faith appreciates cleanliness and that’s why, it is often said that, “cleanliness is next to godliness”, perhaps is meant that when one observe good personal hygiene, such person is godly.

It amazes me when I see students around their schools or even in their houses and they put up with poor personal hygiene. Some of them clean mucus of their nostrils with their school uniforms instead of their handkerchiefs, some others don’t get to wash their plates before eating, some are not in the habit of washing their school uniforms and other accessories like socks, ties etc. The most painful part of it has to do with students who do not have their bath or brush their teeth before going to school; they stink so much because they do not observe good personal hygiene.

I remember what we were taught in Sunday school many years ago, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he grows, he will not depart from it”. Many parents are guilty of poor personal hygiene, they live in unhygienic environment and observe poor hygiene for themselves and their kids get to unavoidably learn this bad attitude.

However, things can be changed. Poor personal hygiene can be replaced by good personal hygiene; it takes the willingness of individuals involved. Every young person’s must be enlightened on the danger of poor hygiene and guided on how to observe good hygiene.

Students can embrace the following processes to maintain a good personal hygiene

If you can help yourself, you can have a good bath twice daily but at least once. Dead cells are usually on the skin pores everyday especially at the outset of rising from bed, if you don’t wash it off properly through a good bath, you would be easily predisposed to unhealthy conditions. As much as you can, take your bath daily.

Washing hands before and after eating, after using the toilet, and after playing with pets. If you do this, you would do away with germs and embrace good health. You would visit the hospital less. After washing your hands, drying the hands is also a must as germs thrive best in moist environment.

Transference of germs from hand to mouth can be reduced with the aid of eating utensils, some of which can include spoons, forks, knife etc, although it is important to clean them before and after use.

Students must do all in their capacity to brush their teeth always. It was recommended by the dentist that everyone must brush their teeth twice a day. Apart from brushing regularly, you must avoid candies, soft drinks, sugary processed foods and take more healthy snacks. Doing this will prevent you from having a date with the dentist as a result of teeth problems.

Cut your nails regularly, and avoid nail-biting. The germs underneath your nails are quite enormous and if you refuse to cut them, you might be tempted to bit the nails, which will transfer these germs into your mouth. Do your best to cut your nails on a weekly basis and keep it low always.

Personal hygiene can help us to avoid spending so much money at the hospital while we enjoy good health always.
