This catastrophe is [perhaps] most pronounced in Borno State, affecting many schools and causing them to close down as both Students and Teachers escaped for their dear lives. Today however, things are changing for the better. With the continuous de-escalation of the terrorists, life in those villages and small towns up North is gradually returning to normal. With this comes the reopening of schools and the return of students back to the Classrooms. This makes us glad!
Unfortunately, virtually every school in these affected places is in dire need of several kinds of support. Classroom blocks need to be rebuilt and learning materials provided. And then there is the glaring need to provide welfare support to both students and teachers alike. Perhaps it is for this that the Caretaker Chairman of Gubio Local Government Area in Borno State has stepped up to the challenge of meeting these needs. News reaching us indicate that he has introduced a free feeding programme for pupils in Public Primary Schools in a bid to assist the parents of the pupils who are still recovering from the mayhem caused by the conflict. But beyond that, this programme also has the intention of encouraging increased number of enrollment in schools.
Additionally, free school uniforms and teaching materials were also distributed across a total of twenty one schools in the area. The Chairman hopes this gesture will help alleviate the extreme rate of illiteracy and poverty among the grassroots.
We are really impressed with this effort from a Local Council Chairman and we hope the others like him will take up such initiative. This is very important at this point in time even as stakeholders call for better Education for Nigeria’s children. Most importantly, we hope that Government across the various levels will increase funding for public schools as well as ensure the safety of children while they study.
