Today is International Women’s Day, a special day dedicated towards celebrating the various achievements of women in the world. These achievements cut across all spheres of human life- social, economic, cultural, political and even familial. In a place like Nigeria, celebrating dedicating a day like this to celebrate womanhood is most imperative considering the many challenges our mothers, grandmothers, sisters and girlfriends [wives] face on a daily basis. Please read more about the International Women’s Day below-
International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since in the early 1900’s – a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. International Women’s Day is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity. No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day. Many organizations declare an annual IWD theme that supports their specific agenda or cause, and some of these are adopted more widely with relevance than others.
“The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights,” says world-renowned feminist, journalist and social and political activist Gloria Steinem. Thus International Women’s Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action – whatever that looks like globally at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women’s Day has been occurring for well over a century – and continue’s to grow from strength to strength.
Do you have any women in your life? Are you a young woman reading this post right now and probably wondering whether the world cares about you? Have you ever asked yourself what would become of humanity without women? Do you realize that the whole earth could as well become extinct without women in it? Indeed women are valuable to humanity and we should indeed celebrate them because the run this world as Beyonce would say. They continually do all that is within their capabilities to make our world a better place; in spite of the many unfavourable circumstances they face. They give birth to babies, nurturing the next generation of humans and constantly strive to make the world a better place even though society often tend to silence them and relegate them to the bottom…
Be grateful for all that the women in of this world and let us all collectively wish them well in everything that they do. May they continue to be great forces of nature, beautiful [inside out] and gracious. And above all, may they continue to be the voices and symbols of hope that will make this world the paradise we all want it to be.
