Nigeria Police and Schools to Partner on Safety Initiative

In light of the incessant kidnappings of students reported in different parts of the country, the Police Command in Enugu State is set to partner with stakeholders to implement the Federal Government’s Safe School Initiative in primary and secondary schools. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, this disclosure was made today in Enugu State by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer- SP Ebere Amaraizu.

“The command has concluded arrangements to partner principals and proprietors of public and private secondary schools in Enugu State to promote and maintain sustainable safety of lives and properties in our schools. The command will also collaborate with the state Ministry of Education and Post Primary School Board, among other bodies,” Amaraizu said.

He further stated that the police were being proactive to ensure that schools are safe and secure for teaching and learning. This is exactly the purpose for which the Federal Government initiated this project with the intention of protecting schools against violence; including  acts of abductions, attacks by terrorists especially in the Northeast.

Schools and pupils have been subjects of attack by kidnappers, who have often demanded huge ransoms from relations of their victims to ensure their releases.

The threat to the safety of school children came to the fore in 2014 when more than 200 schoolgirls in Government Secondary School Chibok, Borno, were kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents.
