Following a successful hosting of the Milo Basketball Championship, Nestle Nigeria Plc in conjunction with International Association of Athletics Federation, IAAF has flagged off a Healthy Kids Athletics initiative with the aim of developing the skills of Nigerian children at the grassroots.
Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, said that the partnership, first of its kind in Nigeria will go a long way to produce future Olympians that will represent Nigeria in future championships as the country’s dwindling athletics fortune over the years will be a thing of the past.
The programme, which was unveiled yesterday at Opebi Primary School, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos, will see the children taking part in 26 modified events, most especially in jumping, running and hurdles.
Managing Director of Nestle Nigeria Plc, Mr. Dharnesh Gordhon said the Kids Athletics programme marks a crucial step forward for kid’s sports development in the country.
Nestle’s CEO noted that the project is expected to expand the scope of athletics and related activities for children of primary school age, as well as identify and recruit young talents from the first primary school years upward.
“The Nestle’s sponsorship will also boost the programme allowing IAAF to organise additional courses for lecturers and coaches with the aim of attracting and sustaining the potential sporting stars of tomorrow.”
“The programme is not intended only for clubs and member federations but also for schools and all institutions that are interested in the well-being of children. The programme targets three age categories: 7-8, years, 9-10 years and 11-12 years,” Gordhon said.
