The Meaning of Drug Abuse

Drug abuse is simply defined as the inappropriate use of drugs. It is the habitual taking of addictive or illegal drugs. It is the use of drugs or substance in a wrong way.

The Results of Drug Abuse

The results of drug abuse are listed below

  • Drug abuse hurts the people who take drugs and the people around them, including families, kids, and babies who aren’t born yet. Drug abuse hurts the body and the brain, sometimes forever.
  • Some drugs lead to mental disorder; some drug when  abuse leads to insanity.
  • Drug abuse can lead to loss of job; workers who are addicted to drug become inefficient in their job and therefore can be sacked.
  • It can lead to broken home
  • It can cause accident

Sources of Drugs

  1. Plant sources
  2. Animal sources
  3. Mineral/ Earth sources
  4. Microbiological sources
  5. Semi synthetic sources/ Synthetic sources
  6. Recombinant DNA technology

Positive Use of Drugs

  • Sometimes, most drug are used for preservation of some food e.g canned food
  • It can also be used for healing different ailment of different kinds, either in plants, animals or human
  • It can also be used for growth; many agricultural products need drugs for growth to fertilize them for proper germination.

Forms of Drug Abuse

Drugs can be abused in the following ways:

  • Sleep-inducing drugs such as the barbiturates, this drug usually slows a person down.
  • Powerful pain killers (narcotics) like opium, heroine and cocain
  • Hallucination producing chemicals like marijuana (Indian hemp) and LSD, these cause hallucination and loss of contact with reality, so that the affected person mistakes his own inner feelings for concrete things inn his environment.
  • Stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamines. Some of drugs like this are used by students to stay awake but such students run the risk of developing a dependence on the drugs.
