All over the world in recent times, teaching and learning have overly gone beyond the orthodox classroom settings. Tech-savvy teachers and students are taking full advantage of technology both within and outside the school. Today, there are increasingly sophisticated learning tools on offer via mobile phones. And, the opportunities provided by augmented reality, educational gaming and social networking for peer collaboration are enticing.
Mobile learning offers modern ways to support learning process through mobile devices. It presents unique attributes compared to conventional e-learning: personal, portable, collaborative, interactive, contextual and situated, it emphasises “just-in-time-learning” as instruction can be delivered anywhere and at anytime through it.
Mobile learning is emerging as one of the solutions to the challenges faced by education.
As we’ve all observed, the number of smartphones being sold is soaring. Almost every student now has a mobile phone. Phone has gone from being a luxury to a necessity.
Students are preferring mobile phones as medium of preference for accessing the internet. This further emphasises the growing popularity of mobile phones. What is required now, however, is helping students use the phones in a way that will aid their academic pursuit and put them on the right path to a bright future.
The real story here is about education. It’s about how we’re all going to be learning in the next few years and generations. Where students are never going to be limited by the knowledge of their school teachers. There is never going to be time constraint to learning anymore, as students have opportunity to learn all round the clock.
Thank goodness Nigeria is beginning to get into the flow.
It’s an emerging mobile-first world, and that’s why some of the biggest and fastest-growing tools in education are apps and mobile-friendly web tools.
Mobile learning is not only on the rise, it’s inevitable and don’t be left out.
