5 Ways To Focus On Your Homework

Homework is a pain in the butt and an even more pain in the butt for teens and kids who have to do it. Usually, we try to make excuses from doing homework or procrastinate until the last moment when we absolutely have to do it. There are a couple of things which would prevent us from procrastinating until the last minute and focus on our work.

No TV

Ok, that doesn’t sound any fun; however, the greatest reason to procrastinate is when your favorite TV show is on. Homework, TV shows, homework, TV shows… I don’t know about you, but I’d choose the TV show. Working in front of a TV is generally a bad idea as it gives us an excuse to procrastinate instead of working. A good policy to enforce is to have the TV turned off. You won’t be able to imagine how much faster it is to finish your homework, and enjoy a stress-free night full of TV and recreational activities.

Radio stations and music

Radio stations are actually a keeper. Scientific study shows that with our favorite music, we learn faster. So I’d say listen to music if it helps you learn better and work faster. Plus, I honestly feel it makes the situation less boring and tense (especially if it’s last minute!)

Fixed schedule

In order to promote finishing your homework on time, and before the due date, set up a fixed schedule. It can also help you do your homework when you know that after school you have to do 2 hours straight of homework, and then get a 10 minute rest. It also helps prevent procrastination because you can’t say “I’ll do it later”, and later becomes never.

In your schedule set some time up where you can catch your breathe, and relax or walk around the house a bit. This will waken you up, and give you something to look forward to.

Good Study Area

Create a good study area for yourself – an area which is comfortable, have good lighting, quiet etc. Suit your own needs. A good study area will encourage you to work better.

Telephone rules, washroom breaks, and water breaks

As a general idea, you should consider all the telephone time you take up phoning a classmate to confirm the homework, ask homework questions, and go to the washroom. These minutes add up to a lot of wasted time!

By implementing methods that will help your teen focus, and removing many distracting factors, you will find that their concentration ability increases dramatically allowing them to better understand and comprehend their homework.
