Kayode and Aliyu received a certificate and a laptop computer each, while Yakubu and Udobi each received a certificate and a home theatre system.

Speaking at the presentation, Chioma Afe, Marketing Manager, DStv ideitifed the award as proof of the company’s commitment to promoting technology education in Nigeria, and a platform for encouraging young ones to challenge themselves and come up with ideas and innovation that will eventually propel the nation to greatness.

“The DStv Eutelsat Star Awards is meant to inspire innovative thinking among secondary school students in Africa, to create awareness on how science and technology can be applied to everyday life, and to showcase the many ways that satellites already impact on the development of the African continent,” Afe said.

“The multiplier effect of what is happening here today can only be imagined. The knowledge of science and technology, which the awards spearhead, will be made manifest in the socio-economic growth informed by new thinking and orientation of today’s youth.”

Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Lagos and Lead Judge for DStv Eutelsat Star Awards 2013, Funsho Falade commended the winners for their efforts.

“We were thorough with the judging procedure,” Falade said. “There were many quality entries but the ones that made it to the top were those that satisfied all the specified criteria which were: understanding and demonstration of satellite technology and its application to everyday life, coherence in the manner of presentation, and flow.”

He said the Nigerian winners of this year’s awards stand a good chance of clinching top prizes at the continental level, which is the next stage for the winning entries.
The annual awards take the form of a competition open to 14-19 year-old students to write an essay or design a poster on the specified topic.

“Like their 2011 and 2012 counterparts, this year’s overall continental essay and poster winners will win trip for two to the Eutelsat facilities in Paris, France with the essay winner travelling onwards to witness a live rocket launch,” Segun Fayose, head of public relations, MultiChoice Nigeria said while explaining the prospects of the Nigerian winners.

He added that runners-up will win a trip to South Africa as guests of MultiChoice Africa, while schools of the overall winners will receive a DStv installation, including dish, television, PVR decoder and free access to the DStv Education Bouquet.

First held in 2011, the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards is designed to identify and create awareness on satellite technology and its applications within the society. It was established in 2011 by MultiChoice Africa in collaboration with Eutelsat, leading satellite operator for broadcasting, broadband, and data services.
