#PNN E-MENTORING (Olabisi Ogunwale): What is the Best Time to Study? Day vs Night

The answer to this question, depending on who is being asked, is bound to generate controversial reactions but I am certain that, for better academic performance, it is very important to know when the best time for us to study is.

I have seen a lot of students who prefer to wake up early to read or some read during the day while many prefer to stay up late reading at night because it is most productive period for them. Also, some prefer to read alone while some prefer to be in clusters when they are studying for ease of comparing notes. Whichever class you fall into does not really matter but what is most important is that you should know when you have the best brain power to support your studying exercise.

So how do you find which period is best for you? You have to find it!

1.    Trying to know which period works best for you means you have to try out the periods to find out which is the best time to adopt. For example you might want to wake up early to read so that you know if it makes sense. Same goes for other periods.

2.    Set a time table for you to read and make sure you keep to the timing religiously. So if you read at night you might want to start at say 6 or 7pm (this is just a guide) and stop at 11pm so you can get enough sleep to prepare for the next day.

3.    Remove all the distractions when you want to study. You must do away with your phones, put of the Televisions, Radio or any other audio-visual instrument that might distract you. You need to be focused, relaxed enough to get the best out of your study time.

4.    Ensure you carry your parents along on the study period you have decided upon. This helps them in understanding your plans and reduces the chances of miscommunication.

5.    Seek help if you need to. Talking to your teachers, friends and parents might be a good place to start and I can assure you that if you keep to a regular reading time you will unconsciously develop a wonderful studying habit which would go a long way to boost your academic performance.
