There are two types of people in the world: the ones who confidently employ Internet terms IRL (that’s “in real life” should you be wondering), and the ones who are apprehensive to incorporate them into their vocabulary in fear of saying them incorrectly.
Well, whether or not you know how to properly use “digital citizen” or “Mx” in a sentence, there’s good news. The most important online slang from 2015 is being added to the dictionary — meaning acceptance for those who are fluent in “fleek” and new knowledge for those who aren’t.
Dictionary.com, which is gaining more popularity these days will be adding a long list of new words to their database on November 11 (yep! 2ma0). The full list is still unavailable, but a number of web-inspired definitions have already been released. Here are a few of the gems that have been deemed worthy of scholarly interpretation:
- Digital Citizen: a person who develops the skills and knowledge to effectively use the Internet and other digital technology, especially in order to participate responsibly in social and civic activities.
- Fleek: Slang. flawlessly styled, groomed, etc.
- Sapiosexual: a person who finds intelligence to be a sexually attractive quality in others.
- Mx: a title of respect prefixed to a person’s surname: unlike Mr., Mrs., or Ms., it does not indicate gender and may be used by a person with any or no specific gender identity.
- Yaaas: Slang. Yes! (used as a strong expression of excitement, approval, agreement, etc.)
Recognise any? Use any yet? Not to worry, it’s never too late. They will become perfectly legit from tomorrow.
