A former diplomat, Chief Arthur Mbanefo, has donated a research centre fitted with a digital library to the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The facility named the Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Centre (AMDRC) was bequeathed to the university Friday, last week as part of activities to celebrate the donor’s 90th birthday.
Mbanefo said he had always been attracted to human development. He added that he donated the centre to the university to promote training and development of youths.
“I have been drawn naturally to creating institutions and schemes for the promotion of human development. This was why I had no hesitation deciding on this legacy which I am happy to bequeath today to the University of Lagos for the training and imparting knowledge to young Nigerians seeking self-improvement,” he said.
The donor acknowledged the support of those who helped to actualise the project specifically praising the efforts of the late Prof. Adetokunbo Sofoluwe who ensured he got the approval of the University’s Governing Council for the project. Hence, the e-Library within the centre was named after him.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe lauded the donor for his efforts towards human development while giving the assurance that the facility will be well managed and maintained.
Earlier, Chairman of the AMDRC Board, Mr. Ernest Ebi, while congratulating Mbanefo, described him as a patriot and exceptional Nigerian who remained committed to the development of the country.
