Beware! List of Illegal Universities in Nigeria (According to NUC)

Two more universities have been added to the updated National Universities Commission (NUC) List of Illegal Universities in Nigeria, bringing the total to fifty-seven.

The new entrants to the list are the Kaduna Bussiness School, Kaduna and  the Royal University of Theology, Minna, Niger Delta, while a further eight are still being investigated.

“The National Universities Commission (NUC) wishes to announce to the general public, especially parents and prospective undergraduates, that the under-listed “Degree Mills” have not been licensed by the Federal Government and have, therefore, been closed down for violating the Education (National Minimum Standards etc.) Act CAP E3 Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004,” NUC stated in an announcement published in the (NUC) bulletin report for January 12, 2015.

Members of the public have been warned not to patronize the listed institutions.

“Certificates obtained from these sources will not be recognised for the purposes of NYSC, employment, and further studies,” the Commission warned.

The following institutions are “currently undergoing further investigations and/or on-going court actions” and the NUC says the proprietors may be prosecuted in order to “recover illegal fees and charges on subscribers.”

Many illegal institutions of learning operate in Nigeria, forcing the NUC to conduct regular checks and shut downs.

In July 2014, the NUC Committee on Closure of Illegal Universities shut down the Evangel Christian University of America which operated from a three-bedroom flat located at Egan in Ojo, Lagos.
