I personally dread book reviewing; this is because it involves a description, critical analysis and evaluation on the quality, meaning and significance of a book. It does not mean retelling the book, it is neither a book report nor summary but it focuses on the book’s purpose, content and authority.
Reviewing a book is not always easy, because the reviewer definitely has to read the entire book, boring or not! Not only will the reviewer read but he/she has to understand the plots, the author’s opinion, the author’s argument, what the author is trying to say, the author’s intended audience, the author’s style, the author’s attitude towards the characters if there are and so on.
The first step to reviewing a book is getting a book in your line of interest. Except if you are given as a job or duty to review a particular book it is always best to review a book in your line of interest. This gets you enthusiastic and helps you avoid boredom while reading.
The next step is to start reading the book. Never ever procrastinate, no matter how boring or tiresome reading seems. Also never read in too much bits for too long. It is best to read at a stretch and if not maybe in two or three stretches. This will help to conclude on the necessary things needed for reviewing the book faster and more accurately.
After reading the book recall everything about the book; the good and the bad. Decide on your opinion of the book whether the book is good or bad, then begin to write the review.
WRITING THE REVIEW
Introduction
Firstly you should begin by writing a brief introduction of the book and the name of the author. The introduction must include the basis of the story for example “about the book” which usually involves the storyline, who or what the book is about.
Relating
This involves relating the story to a real life incident; this would help your review better and also help you to tell the readers if it is recommended that they read the book.
Opinion stating
- Move straight to stating your opinion afterall that is what reviewing is majorly about. Relate your opinion to the good and the bad aspect of the book. In this way you can be fair.
Conclusion
When you have finished, write your name at the end of the review. Go over it again to check for flaws before finally publishing it.
