#BringBackOurGirls has become the most popular hashtag in Nigeria this year, with the Twitter trend hitting over a million tweets.
Used on social media as a way of demanding the return of over 200 schoolgirls abducted on April 14, 2014 in Chibok Borno State, the hashtag has gone from a local trend to receiving international attention in the last seven days.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, a lawyer in Abuja, was one of the first to use the hashtag.
‘Initially, this was not a coordinated campaign. It was a number of individuals in Nigeria tweeting to raise awareness in the hope that the international community would eventually take notice,’ Abdullahi told the BBC.
The hashtag is also very popular on Facebook and Instagram, receiving over 150,000 posts on the latter.
It has been posted by a number of global celebrities and personalities including the first lady of the United States Michelle Obama, actress Angelina Jolie and pop singer Chris Brown.
