ARE CELEBRITIES THE ONLY ROLE MODELS YOU CAN HAVE?

So you listen to their music, watch them on your television screens and wuala…you wish to become just like them. Celebrities! They can have such mesmerizing influence on you. I mean, with their flashy lifestyles and hippy ways, it only suffices that every “happening kid” will want to model after them. Just ask the next tween who their favourite human beings are and then you hear names like Olamide, Wizkid, and Tiwa Savage etc. Ask them why they model their lives after these people and they tell you- “I want to blow!”

WIZKID

Well here is to blow your minds- not every one of you will become actors and musicians albeit famous ones. And for this very reason, it will rather be a waste of your time trying so hard to be like someone you will never be. Without any intention to categorize every famous person as the same, the truth is that they often have negative influences on you. According to theconversation.com, “musicians and performers have long been considered to influence young people in negative ways” and for this reason they are constantly under scrutiny from the public. Their carefree lifestyles, provocative dressing and unnecessary dramas/controversies are definitely not worth emulating. Moreover, you can hardly find a Nigerian celebrity giving life lessons to youths on how you can become better, more mature citizens of society.

So are celebrities the only people you can ever strive to become like? Most definitely not! No doubt you are young, pop culture savvy and with an endless desire to belong. Yet, in spite of all that you have a primary focus as a teenager which is to lay the right foundation for the best adult you could ever be. And there is no better way to do that than to acquire the right education. I know many of y’all will disagree with me right now. But you can ascertain my assertion by conducting a little research, comparing the lives of most people [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][in Nigeria] who are educated with those ones who aren’t. You will see the difference. Indeed, there is no gainsaying that empowering yourself academically should remain your primary focus. And what better way to do that than to model your lives after people who are doing well in the academia.   The good news is that such people abound even in your localities and as such are easily accessible unlike the likes of Davido and co.

This topic may sound very boring to some.  But trust me you need to hear stuff like this for your own good. It will be very unfortunate if you make the mistake of spending your entire life dreaming to become like Iyanya only to wake up at seventy years old and realize that is impossible. This should however not to dissuade you from loving your stars. My emphasis is only on the need for a balance. Realize that celebrities are not the only role models there are and definitely not the best of them.  And most importantly, strive to model your lives after people who have successfully advanced academically just as you are trying to do.

All the best, please!
