Wayne Rooney believes Chelsea are playing the best football in the England as Manchester United head in to a derby game next Tuesday with neighbours City.
United striker Rooney will watch today’s Champions League quarter final draw with interest after Wednesday night’s thrilling 3-0 win over Olympiacos and believes David Moyes’ team can even go all the way in this year’s competition.
Ahead of next week’s derby encounter with City in the Barclays Premier League, however, Rooney believes Chelsea have the upper hand in the title race.
He said: ‘You look at the three Spanish teams left in the Champions League they’re all good teams.
‘But Chelsea are probably playing the best football this season.
‘I know they lost at Villa but they’re playing some good football and obviously you’ve got Bayern Munich and PSG who are playing well.
‘It’s a talented group of teams so whoever we get I’m sure it will be a tough game.’
Rooney believes United rediscovered some of their real selves during Wednesday night’s victory and has called on his team-mates to take that in to the remainder of the season.
‘It’s something we have to kick on from now. We’ve still got a few games left in the season and we want to build on tonight. Hopefully we can do that.
‘With a bit of luck hopefully we can go far in the Champions League. We’re in the quarter final so you never know what can happen from there. It’s a massive win and we are looking forward to the draw.’
United’s performance against Olympiacos featured a vintage display from player-coach Ryan Giggs.
Now 40-years-old, Giggs hadn’t played since January but was one of United’s best players against the Greek champions.
‘It’s not been nice, obviously not doing well or as well as we have done in the past,’ said Giggs.
‘But we still believe, and you still know that you have good players in the dressing room.
‘You are sat next to quality players and I think you have seen a bit of that this week.
‘That will give us hopefully that lift and carry us on because we have had good results this year and probably not carried it on and that is what we need to do now.’
