The Church That is Actually a Shoe

Yes, you read right! The church is a 16m-high (55ft) glass church in the shape of a high-heeled shoe, built in Taiwan. The inspiration behind the structure goes thus:

In the 1960s, a 24-year-old girl surnamed Wang from the impoverished region of Chaiyi suffered from Blackfoot disease.

Both of her legs had to be amputated, leading to the cancellation of her wedding. She remained unmarried, and spent the rest of her life at a church. The high heel is intended to honour her memory.

The entire structure was made out of over 320 tinted glass panels, the shiny blue building measures more than 10m (36ft) wide and cost about T$23m (about 137million!). It is set to open its doors to the public on 8 February, just in time for Chinese New Year.

According to Pan Tsuei-ping, the administration’s recreation section manager:

The church will not be used for regular services, but pre-wedding photo shoots and wedding ceremonies. Also, in our planning, we want to make it a blissful, romantic avenue, because every girl imagines how she will look like when she becomes the bride.

In addition, government spokesman Zheng Rongfeng said the focus of the church is to attract women, this much he inferred when he said:

There will be 100 female-oriented features in the church like maple leaves, chairs for lovers, biscuits and cakes

And what do women for whom it was built think?

Some think the structure is disrespectful to women, and reduces them to heel wearing objects. Some others will have none of that; they think it looks better than most modern churches, and that it’s a great way for the officials to focus on women for once, since most girls love fairytales.

What do you think?
