Non- Alignment

Non alignment is defined as non-commitment of a nation to either the west or the east bloc usually on international issues. It is mostly associated with neutrality especially between the two super powers in the era of cold war.

It is a national policy repudiating political or military alliance with a world power, as the U.S. or the People’s Republic of China.

Non-alignment is a foreign policy oriented which allows nations (third world country) to discuss and access international issues objectively.

ORIGIN OF NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT (NAN)

  1. It is an international movement drawn from different countries of the world mostly third world countries mostly Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean
  2. The major aim of this movement is the adoption of the non-confrontational posture or approach the world issues
  3. The movement was founded by the following people Josef Tito of Yuhoslavie, Jawara, Neliru of India, GamalAbdel Nasser of Egypt
  4. This reaction of the(Russia) solviet union and the United State of America, as the two greatest world power and subsequently the emergence of the era of the cold war between the super powers
  5. The coming together of 25 states at the conference in Belgrade in 1961 eventually saw the formation of non-aligned movement (NAM)
  6. Currently there are 113 nations making up the movement

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT

  1. Elimination of all trace of colonization, racial segregation and neo-colonization in 3rd world country
  2. Mounting opposition to issues and arms race and nuclear weapons for the elimination of war heads and disbarment
  3. To support every move at resolutions of disputes among nations
  4. To create an avenue for states to interact freely within the comity of Nations
  5. To allow nations pursue their economic and political policies without any interference from either the East or the West
  6. To create opportunities for discussion and assessment of international objectively
  7. To strongly oppose the East and West ideology divide and the division of the world into two opposing blocs. The west represents U.S.A and western European countries (capitalism) and the east represents Russia and eastern European countries (communism)
  8. To allow nations work towards safeguarding their territorial integrity and non-interference in the sovereignty of states
  9. To work and co-operate with other international bodies or organizations for peace and security, globally

FACTORS THAT STIMULATES THE FORMATION OF NON-ALIGNED MOVEMENT

  1. The formation of North Atlantic treaty Organization (NATO) and Warsaw pact in 1949 and 1955 respectively
  2. To era of cold war and the accumulation of warheads and weapons of mass destruction by some of the big powers
  3. The opposition of bi-polarization of the world by Nehru of India and Tito of Yugoslavia
  4. The desire of most independent state to modify and consolidate their independency
  5. The aspiration and desire of independent state
