Yesterday, traffic around the Oba Ovoranmwen Square in Benin, Edo State, was held up by curious people who gathered to see how Aghogho Ajine, 20, tested his handmade wooden toy ‘drone’.
The toy, a remote-controlled plane, took off, flew through the sky and landed successfully, with the onlookers cheering with excitement.
However, officials of the Edo State Traffic Agency seemed not amused. The young man was held for causing traffic congestion, but the crowd managed to make the traffic officials return the money they collected from him.
The 20-year-old Delta State indigene claimed he hasn’t been trained to make that kind of toys, adding he built the ‘drone’ after doing a personal research at home.
“I am from Delta State. I have not been to any school before. My house is my school. I learned it at home from my research. I used plywood to build it,” the young man said.
Although some persons offered to buy the young man food, he declined.
A ‘drone’ is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), that is, an aircraft without a human pilot on board. Its flight is controlled either autonomously by computers in the vehicle or under the remote control of a pilot on the ground or in another vehicle.
