THE Nigerian Computer Society, NCS, has warned against the use of text messages and social media to create fear, and spread false information on the spread of Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.
Commending the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government for their emergency response in containing the EVD in Nigeria, the President of the the umbrella body of Nigerian IT professionals, Prof. David Adewumi, in a statement said deployment of technology to enhance the achievement of Nigeria’s health goals was imperative.
Noting that the emergence of EVD raises national health and security issues, he said the public health must be taken serious as an integral element of any nation’s national security.
While condemning stigmatization of victims, he said caution and deep sense of responsibilities should be the focus of Nigerians at this time.
According to him, “the EVD spread in West Africa calls for continued vigilance and embrace of recommended health practices by the populace to improve the quality of detection and prevention.
“Nigeria Computer Society is ready and willing at all times to partner with the Federal and State Governments in the innovative utilisation of information technology to support and enhance the handling of the EVD threat and national health security.”
