Ekiti State teachers shun resumption over unpaid salaries

As students from both private and public schools are billed to resume school today, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Ekiti State chapter has directed its members not to resume at their duty posts until the August and September salaries, as well as the July deductions were paid.

Speaking with newsmen  in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, the NUT Chairman in the State, Samuel Akosile, blamed Governor Kayode Fayemi’s administration for allegedly laying less emphasis on the welfare of teachers in the state.

Akosile said the state government  has no justification to ask its members to resume duties when they are being owed two months salaries and other allowances, while others in other sectors, particularly at the Local Government level have been paid up to September.

Teachers in the State are supposed to resume for the 2014/2015 session on September 17, but was later postponed till today, Wednesday due to the threat the spread of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, posed to the country.

The NUT boss said the body has no option than to continue with the strike embarked upon by other civil servants in the State last Thursday over similar agitations.
