Social networking apps usually bring people together but a new gadget does quite the opposite.
HateWithFriends.com asks users to log in with their Facebook account. It then pulls up a list of their ‘friends’ and urges them reveal who they secretly ‘hate’ by clicking on a button below each face.
If that same person has used the service and the ‘hatred’ is mutual, the site will inform both parties via email.
The ‘frenemies’ can then decide if they want to officially de-friend each other.
Many have already questioned the purpose of the service.
One commentator wrote: ‘LOL this is sooooo [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][sic] high school for me. If you don’t like someone just delete them.’
Another added: ‘Why would you have Facebook friends and not know whether they liked you or not? Aren’t YOU in control of what friends you have?’
One critic cited it as an example of how technology has had a negative impact on society.
‘I know that none of my friends hate me. I don’t have a Facebook account. So if they hated me, they wouldn’t call me back. Or go out to eat with me.
‘Socialising the old fashion way seems like a simple solution to figuring out if someone hates you.’
The tool was the brainchild of Chis Baker, 30, a former creative director at the news website BuzzFeed who has also invented other, slightly more social, apps.
He says HateWithFriends.com isn’t meant to be taken very seriously and expects that it will be a rare occurrence when mutual hatred is found on the site.
‘It’s meant to be some fun and social commentary on the current status of Facebook,’ he told ABC News.
‘I think this anti-social stuff is the next big trend.’
