Week 1 – Introduction to chemistry

Overview – Chemistry is an aspect of pure science that deals with the scientific study of matter, its composition, properties, uses and the changes it undergoes. This week looks at what chemistry entails. We are going to learn about the careers and fields that need that knowledge of chemistry. We are also going to become knowledgeable on the uses of chemistry and the adverse effects of chemistry on society e.g. drug abuse. To learn more, Click here

Week 2 – Nature of matter

Overview – The word “matter” is defined as anything that has mass and occupies space. This means that matter has both mass and volume and it exists everywhere in the world. This week, we shall learn about the properties of matter (chemical and physical) as well as the physical and chemical changes of matter. To learn more, Click here

Week 3 – Elements (I)

Overview – An element is a substance which cannot be split into simpler units by an ordinary chemical process. The names of the elements are represented by letters called chemical symbols. This week, we shall look at how these elements get their chemical symbols, the first twenty elements and the classes of elements (metals, metalloids and non-metals). We shall also be introduced to the concept of valency, isotopy, atoms as well as atomic numbers and mass numbers. To learn more, Click here

Week 4 – Elements (II)

Overview – Having been introduced to the elements, this week, we shall learn about the molecules. A molecule is defined as the simplest unit of a substance that has the ability to exist alone and still retain the chemical properties of the substance be it an element or a compound. We shall also learn about Dalton’s atomic theory, a theory that was formulated by John Dalton.  Modifications to Dalton’s atomic theory were later made due to new discoveries. Week 5 – Particulate nature of matter

Overview – Matter consists of particles such as atoms, molecules and ions. This week, we shall become knowledgeable about the sub-atomic properties (electrons, neutrons and protons), their discovery and ions. We shall learn about the orbitals (s, p, d and f) and the electronic configuration of the first twenty elements, the quantum numbers (n, l, m and s) and the principles or rules that govern the filling of electrons into orbitals. The principles help guide us on how to properly fill electrons (the number of electrons) into orbitals. To learn more, Click here

Week 6 – The relative atomic masses of elements

Overview – The relative atomic mass of an element refers to the number of times the average mass of one atom of that element is heavier than one-twelfth the mass of one atom of carbon -12. The isotope carbon–12 was recommended by scientists as a standard for measuring the relative atomic masses of other elements. This week, we shall learn about the relative atomic mass of elements, its calculation and the relative molecular masses of elements. To learn more, Click here

Week 7 – Compounds

Overview – We have learnt about elements in a previous class and we know that elements make up compounds. The compounds are a chemical combination of two or more elements. Elements also make up what we call a mixture but there are also mixtures that are a mix of elements and compounds. Mixtures and compounds are different in so many ways. This week, we shall learn about compounds. We shall also learn how to represent compounds in the form of chemical formulae. To learn more, Click here

Week 8 – IUPAC nomenclature of chemical compounds

Overview – International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) is an authority that is globally recognized for chemical nomenclature and terminology. This week, we shall learn about the rules applied in the systematic naming of chemical compounds. We shall also become familiar with the term oxidation number, its uses and how elements and compounds are assigned their oxidation numbers. To learn more, Click here

 

Chemistry Lesson Note For SS1 (First Term) 

Week 9 – Mixture

Overview – Elements, mixtures and compounds are all related. Atoms and molecules make up elements and a combination of these elements make up chemical compounds and mixtures. However, mixtures can be a combination of elements and compounds. Unlike compounds, mixtures can be separated by physical methods such as filtration, fractional distillation, centrifugation, chromatography, and so on. Week 10 – Practical on separation of mixture

Overview – This week, your chemistry teacher will take you through the practical on how to separate mixtures to get the components. You shall become familiar with how some simple separation methods take place.

Week 11 – Revision

Overview – This week, there will be a revision on all the topics covered this term, from the introduction to chemistry to mixtures.

Week 12 – Examination

Overview – This week, we shall be examining all we have learned this term.

Week 13 – Examination
