Physics Lesson Note For SS1 (First Term)

Below are the 2022 complete Physics lesson notes for SS1 First Term

Week 1 – Introduction to Physics

Overview – Physics is a branch of natural science made popular by Aristotle in 350 B.C. It deals with the study of matter, its motion through space and time, along its relation with concepts such as energy and force. It helps us analyze nature in order to understand the behaviour of the universe. Over the years, several scholars have contributed immensely to the growth of physics across the global. The knowledge of physics can helped in the development of economy of countries and in the provision of jobs. This week, we shall be introduced to what the subject physics is about, the contribution of several physicists and the economic importance of physics. To learn more, Click here

Week 2 – Measurement, fundamental and derived quantities and dimensional analysis

Overview – The importance of measurement in physics cannot be overemphasized. It is the act of determining the value of an unknown physical quantity by comparing it with a known standard quantity. This week, we shall learn about measurement. We shall also learn about fundamental and derived quantities and their units – fundamental quantities and units are quantities and units from which other quantities and units (derived) are obtained from. We shall also become knowledgeable about dimensional analysis, electric charges and ways they are produced. To learn more, Click here

Week 3 – Time

Overview – Time is relative. The statement is a summary of Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. Time is defined as that in which events can be distinguished with reference to before and after. This week, we shall learn about time and its measurement over time. To learn more, Click here

Week 4 – Motion in nature

Overview – Motion in physics deals with the movement of things, objects or bodies and the cause of their movement. There all different types of motion, each dependent on how the particles move. This week, we shall learn about motion and the different types of motion. We shall also learn about the cause of motion which is force, the types of force, circular motion and angular speed and velocity.  To learn more, Click here

Week 5 – Friction

Overview – The term “friction” is simply called an opposing force. It opposes the movement of objects. Frictional force is actually very important because without it, human beings would not be able to walk, vehicles would not be able to turn around a bend and so on. This week, we shall learn about the opposing force of motion called friction, types of friction (static and dynamic), the laws of friction, ways to reduce friction, advantages and the disadvantages of friction. Week 6 – Position: Distance, displacement, speed, velocity, distance-time graph

Overview – Position, distance, displacement, speed and velocity are all important physical quantities in physics. The position of an object refers to the point in space that the object can be found. Although similar in meaning, distance and displacement, speed and velocity are quite different from each other. This week, we shall learn about the quantities position, distance, displacement, speed and velocity as well as the distance-time graph.  To learn more, Click here

Week 7 – Rectilinear Acceleration

Overview – Acceleration is defined as the rate of change of velocity with time. It is measured in metre per square second (m/s2). Retardation is negative acceleration, it occurs when velocity decreases with time. This week, we shall learn acceleration, uniform acceleration and rectilinear motion which refers to the motion of an object in a straight line. We shall learn about velocity-time graph. To learn more, Click here…

Week 8 – Density and relative density

Overview – The density (ρ) of a substance is a scalar quantity that is defined as the mass of the substance per unit volume. The relative density is defined as the ratio of the density of a given substance to the density of another substance which serves as a reference usually water. This week, we shall learn about the density and relative density of substances as well as how to measure them. To learn more, Click here…

Week 9 –Upthrust, Archimedes’ principle, laws of floatation.

Pressure: Definition, formula and practical application.

Overview – A Greek mathematician named Archimedes formulated the a principle called Archimedes principle which states that when a body is wholly or partially immersed in fluid, it will experience an upward force (upthrust) that is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. The term “upthrust” is an upward force acting on an object that is immersed in a fluid. The principle of floatation helps us understand why some objects floats and others do not. This week, we shall learn about upthrust, Archimedes’ principle and laws of floatation. We shall also learn about pressure which is a scalar quantity that refers to the perpendicular force per unit area acting on a surface. To learn more, Click here

Week 10 – Work, energy and power

Overview – The concepts of work, energy and power are interrelated. They are all scalar quantities. Work is said to be done when an external energy called force is applied to a body causing it to move. Energy is defined as the capability of a body to do work while power can be defined as the rate at which energy is expended. This week, we shall learn about work, energy and power. To learn more, Click here

Week 11 – Viscosity

Overview – The flow of fluids is determined by their level of viscosity. Viscosity is simply referred to the thickness of a fluid. It is the property that opposes the relative motion that exists between different layers of fluids. This week, we shall learn about viscosity and its effects. We shall also learn about terminal velocity which is the maximum velocity attained by an object that falls into a fluid. To learn more, Click here

Week 12 – Revision/Examination

Overview – This week, there will be a revision on all the topics covered this term, from the introduction of Physics to viscosity. We shall also be examined on all we have learnt this term.

Week 13 – Examination

Overview – This week, we shall be examined on all we have learnt this term.
