Week 1 – Alkanoic acids

Overview – Alkanoic acids are also called carboxylic acids, they are weak organic acids that contain the functional group called the carboxyl group, -COOH. They also form a homologous series that have the general molecular formula, CnH2n+1COOH. There are different types of alkanoic acids depending on the number of carboxyl groups present – monocarboxylic acids, dicarboxylic acids and tricarboxylic acids. This week, we shall learn about the alkanoic acids, the rules that govern the way the compounds they form are named, their physical and chemical properties as well as their uses. We shall learn about the preparation of ethanoic acid as an example for us to know how an alkanoic acid is prepared. To learn more, Click here 

Week 2 – Alkanoates

Overview – Known as alkyl alkanoates or esters, alkanoates are naturally found as major components of fats and oils, fruits and flowers. They have the functional group –C=O–OR’. This week, we shall learn about the alkanoates, their general method of preparation, properties (chemical and physical) and their uses. To learn more, Click here 

Week 3 – Fats and oils

Overview – Fats and oils are naturally occurring esters. The term lipid is used to describe fats and oils. Fats refer to solids that originate from animals while oils are used to describe liquids gotten from plants. This week, we shall learn about fats and oils – their sources, properties and uses. We shall become knowledgeable about processes such as the hydrolysis of fats and oil, hydrogenation of oils and saponification (the formation of soaps). We shall also learn about detergents (soapy and soapless), their mode of action and the differences between soaps and soapless detergents. To learn more, Click here 

Week 4 – Amino acids

Overview – When we think proteins, the word amino acids come to mind. Amino acids are the fundamental structural units of proteins. They possess the amino groups (–NH2) and carboxyl groups (–COOH). There are twenty naturally occurring amino acids and only nine of them are essential, i.e. they can be synthesized by the body. This week, we shall learn about the amino acids and proteins – occurrence, test for proteins and properties. To learn more, Click here 

Week 5 – Natural and Synthetic Polymers

Overview – Natural and synthetic polymers types of polymers and polymers are giant molecules that are formed by the combination of a large number of much smaller molecules which then form a long chain. These polymers especially the synthetic polymers are formed through a process called polymerization. This week, we shall learn about the natural and synthetic polymers, their process of formation (polymerization) and the classes of polymerization. We shall also learn about plastics. Week 6 – Carbohydrates

Overview – Carbohydrates are naturally occurring organic compounds composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. They have the general molecular formula Cx(H2O)y. They can be obtained from both plants and animals as well as from fibres. The carbohydrates can be classed into two – simple and complex carbohydrates (polysaccharides). The simple carbohydrates are further divided into two – monosaccharaides and disaccharides. This week, we shall learn all about the carbohydrates – types and their examples. We shall also learn about starch and cellulose – their preparation, physical and chemical properties, their uses and the test for starch. To learn more, Click here       

Week 7 – Metals and their compounds

Overview – Metals are a group of elements characterized by their high electrical and thermal conductivity due to their delocalized outer electrons which helps differentiate them from non-metals. They are widely distributed in the earth either in their combine form or in their free state. They have several characteristics such as characteristic lustre, high melting and boiling points, etc. This week, we shall learn about the metals – physical and chemical properties, their occurrence, the way they are extracted and what they are used for. Week 8 – Calcium and Aluminium

Overview – Calcium and aluminium are two common elements that are commonly referred to as metals. Discovered by Humphry Davy calcium is a very reactive metal that belongs to the group 2 elements. Due to its highly reactive nature, it is found in its combined form. Aluminium on the other hand is a chemical element that was discovered by Hans Christian Oersted. It belongs to the group 3 family and just like calcium, it is a reactive metal. This week, we shall learn about the elements calcium and aluminium – their extraction, properties (chemical and physical) and their uses. To learn more, Click here         

Week 9 – Tin and Copper

Overview – Belonging to the group IV in the periodic table, tin is a silvery-white metal that is found in the mineral cassiterite. It is used for several purposes such as for making alloys, coating steel and so on. Copper is a transition element with a soft, red appearance with a metallic lustre. It can be used for electroplating, making alloys and so on. This week, we shall learn about the elements tin and copper – their extraction, properties (chemical and physical) and their uses. Week 10 – Iron

Overview – The element iron is one of the most abundant metals in the earth’s crust that belongs to group 8 in the periodic table. It is a transition element that is found in its combined state. Week 11 – Revision

Overview – This week, there will be a revision on all the topics covered this term, from the organic compounds to the metals.
