Africa is home to many amazing and beautiful natural landscapes most of which are world-famous. These landmarks serve as important architectural sites while doubling as tourist attractions; bringing tourists from different parts of the world to behold the wonder of nature. In this post, you will be introduced to five beautiful sites located in different parts of African Continent. Enjoy please.
THE OLDUVAI GORGE: The Olduvai Gorge is located in the Great Rift Valley in East Africa; Tanzania to be specific. It serves as an important site in the quest to understand early human evolution. The Olduvai Gorge has been described as “a steep-sided ravine”, the focus of several archeological excavation programmes. You may be wondering why it may be such an important site. Well, some human species (including the Homo Habilis) are said to have lived at the Olduvai Gorge some 1.9 million years ago.
With the many discoveries so far made at the site, we can now have an idea of earliest humans lived their lives especially during the Stone Age. We now have an idea of the sort of tools they used for their hunting, their culture and everything else there is to know. Indeed, it is an important site towards understanding the human past.
LAKE CHAD: Lake Chad is one of the most important water bodies in Central Africa, providing sources of livelihood to millions of people in Chad, Northern Nigeria and elsewhere. Fed by its tributaries- the Logonee and Yobe River which supply over 90% of the lake’s water, the lake’s water is shared with its many small islands, reed beds and mud banks. There is also a belt of swamplandd which divides the northern and southern parts of the lake. The lake is home to several wildlife including hippopotamus, elephant and crocodiles. It is also important for fishing and is the world’s largest producer of wild spirulina. The lake’s floating islands are beautiful to behold and attracts quite a number of tourists. Unfortunately, it is under threat due to climate change and over dependence.
ASO ROCK: This is a large outcrop that is on the outskirts of Abuja, the capital of Nigeria. The Aso Rock is a 400-metre monolith and is the city’s most noticeable feature. The Nigerian Presidential Complex, Nigerian National Assembly, and Nigerian Supreme Court are located around it. Much of the town extends to the south of the rock. “Aso” means victorious in the native language of the native Asokoro people.
MOUNT KILIMANJARO: Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and it is located in Tanzania, East Africa. It is a dormant volcano with three volcanic cones. I hope you know what those are; a closer attention in the Geography class makes that sound familiar. Anyway, the mountain is part of the Kilimanjaro National Park and serves as a climbing destination; attracting tourists from around the world. The mountain has snows and glaciers at the top, said snows and glaciers which are continually disappearing due to climate change.
MOUNT CAMEROON: This is Africa’s most active volcano located in Cameroon near the Gulf of Guinea. It is also known as Fako or by its native name Mongo ma Ndemi which means “Mountain of Greatness”). It is the highest point in Sub-Saharan (western and central Africa), the fourth highest peak in Africa and the thirty first highest in the entire world. It is part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line, and there are many restrictions as to tourism and research.
