Has ice bucket challenge claimed its first victim? Teen drowns in disused quarry

A teenager has died after drowning at a disused quarry in an apparent ice bucket challenge gone wrong.

Cameron Lancaster, 18, is believed to have taken part in the charity craze before jumping into Fife’s Preston Hill Quarry where cliffs reach 80ft around the edges.

Police were called to the quarry in Inverkeithing, Fife, shortly before 5pm yesterday after receiving a report that a male had disappeared under the water.

Cameron’s family today released a statement saying: “Cameron died in a tragic accident. His death is such a great loss.

“During his short life, he touched so many people with his friendliness, kindness and thoughtful generosity of spirit.

“He will be hugely missed by his family and friends. The family are finding it hard to come to terms with this sudden loss and would ask for privacy at this stad time.”

He is believed to have been from Burntisland (Scotland), around seven miles from the tragedy.

The quarry is popular for tombstoning and in the past there have been warnings against the practice.

Emergency services were sent to the scene and the boy’s body was recovered at about 9pm.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Inquiries are under way to establish the full circumstances of what happened and Police Scotland’s thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time.”
