JSS2 Basic Science Third Term – Hydrogen And Oxygen

Basic Science JSS 2, Third Term, Week 7

Topic: Hydrogen and Oxygen

Hydrogen

Hydrogen exists in the combined state in water, acids, carbohydrates, and hydrocarbons etc. Hydrogen is found free only in very small amount in the atmosphere, recent studies show that large amounts are present in the sun and star. Hydrogen makes certain part of water.

Preparation of Hydrogen

There are many ways of producing Hydrogen for instance reaction of calcium metals with cold water liberates Hydrogen. Reaction of zinc metals with dilute tetraoxosulphate (VI) acid or dilute hydrochloric acid liberates hydrogen.

hydrogen

From the diagram above, dilute hydrochloric acid is poured on zinc. This will attack the zinc with the liberation of hydrogen gas

Zn + 2HCL  ———->  ZnCl2 + H2

Properties of Hydrogen

  1. Hydrogen is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas
  2. It is neutral to moist litmus paper
  3. Hydrogen is the lightest known element. It is 14.4 times less than air
  4. It burns with a pale blue flame and makes a pop sound, forming water
  5. It does not let things burn in it
  6. It is insoluble in water
  7. It is a strong reducing agent, it reduces metallic oxides to pure metal

CuO  +  H2  ——> Cu  +  H2O
